Contra dancing is a fun style of traditional dance that almost everyone can do.  The basics can be learned in about 15 minutes, and if you can walk briskly* you already know 80% of the dance!  Contra dancing’s roots are in Scottish, English and French set dances, but our European immigrants’ various dance styles merged into a truly American dance that is energetic, exciting, and really good exercise.

Dance to live music!

We dance to live music—the bands play Celtic and traditional American tunes, some of which are hundreds of years old, some are modern, and everything in-between.  In contra dancing the focus is on the music and the other people with whom you are dancing.

All are welcome

We sincerely don’t care what genders dance together; we’re a friendly, welcoming, open group.  The best thing about Contra Dancing is that you don't even need to know how to dance or have to bring a partner to have a wonderful first experience.  Our experienced dancers are known for making sure all the beginners dance almost every dance.

*Contra dancing is possible for those who use a wheel chair or who have disabilities.  To discuss these options, please contact Lissa Bengtson.

If you're still wondering "What is Contra Dance", then here is a short video to help answer that question. It is from another Contra Dance group, but don't let that stop you from having fun in San Antonio.
